Continuing the previous days theme with decent movement across a wide range of species making for a pleasant day despite the rain with 525 Pink-footed Geese, 98 Whooper Swan, 2 Wigeon, 8 Teal, 8 Red-throated Diver, 3 Great Crested Grebe, 114 Gannet, 12 Cormorant, 3 Great Skua, 72 Wood Pigeon, 4 Rook, 238 Skylark, 20 Swallow, 50 Tree Sparrow, 4 Grey Wagtail, 10 Alba Wagtail, 397 Meadow Pipit, 7 Rock Pipit, 43 Chaffinch, a Brambling, 3 Greenfinch, 5 Twite, 205 Linnet, 127 Lesser Redpoll, 186 Goldfinch, 420 Siskin, 4 Lapland Bunting, 5 Yellowhammer and 64 Reed Bunting. Kilnsea wetlands held one of the Caspian Gulls (4cy bird) and the usual 2 Spoonbill along with 2 Wigeon, 1 Great Crested Grebe, a Little-ringed Plover, 4 Avocet, 11 Black-tailed Godwit, a Little Stint, 6 Curlew Sandpiper, a Spotted Redshank, 4 Ruff, a Common Sandpiper, 2 Green Sandpiper, a Wood Sandpiper, 7 Greenshank and 15 Mediterranean Gull. Movement today was virtually non-existent with just 4 Common Scoter, 9 Red-throated Diver and 3 Gannet, with 41 Skylark and a Crossbill overland. The Kilnsea wetlands area had a noticeable increase on Wildfowl numbers for some species with now 45 Whooper Swan and 37 Shoveler along with a Pintail, 25 Teal, 760 Wigeon, 7 Little Egret, 14 Little Grebe, 14 Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Ruff, 730 Redshank, a Spotted Redshank and a Greenshank. It was a rather strange all day seawatching session with a F7 N wind battering the coast with frequent lengthy rain squalls, and while some good birds were to be seen there were distinct lack of Auks , Gannets and Kittiwakes, so there were long periods with little happening. The weather conditions did not lend themselves to finding new migrants, but those reamaining included the Cetti's Warbler along the canal and the Firecrest in the Churchyard plus 3 Short-eared Owl, 2 Swallow, 2 House Martin. Totals today were 3 Swift, 143 Skylark, 13 Swallow, 49 House Martin, 6 Alba Wagtail, 235 Meadow Pipit, 13 Rock Pipit, 9 Chaffinch, 17 Greenfinch, 205 Linnet, 28 Lesser Redpoll, 4 Crossbill, 195 Goldfinch, 39 Ssikin, and 9 Reed Bunting, while the best of the sea were 350 Pink-footed Geese, 8 Whooper Swan, 2 Manx Shearwater and an Arctic Skua. The sea continued the Wildfowl theme of the last few days with 220 Pink-footed Geese, 7 Whooper Swan, 23 Shelduck, 6 Pintail, a Velvet Scoter, 16 Common Scoter, 3 Goosander, 29 Red-throated Diver, 2 Great Crested Grebe, 3 Gannet and 29 Auk sp. The totals today saw 19 Long-tailed Skua, 8 Great Skua and 7 Arctic Skua head out, while also moving 13 Teal, 4 Pintail, 20 Common Scoter, 39 Fulmar, 13 Gannet, 8 Oystercatcher, 6 Grey Plover, 13 Knot, a Purple Sandpiper, 4 Dunlin, 5 Redshank, 5 Turnstone, 3 Little Gull and 3 Kittiwake. A flock of 90 Brent Geese along Beacon lane contained a Black Brant lookalike, originally reported as one, but on closer inspection appears to be a hybrid bird, with grey upperpars and messy flanks. On the move today for the vis-miggers were 20 Teal, 28 Common Scoter, a Red-throated Diver, 340 Gannet, 2 Manx Shearwater, 43 Oystercatcher, 34 Grey Plover, 28 Whimbrel, 34 Knot, 11 Sanderling, 79 Dunlin, 30 Redshank, 7 Turnstone, 40 Black-headed Gull, 2 Arctic Skua and 152 Kittiwake, while overland a 1006 Swift, 43 Sand Martin, 17 Swallow and 3 Flava Wagtail. The Bittern was seen again in the Long bank/ Sammies area, while nearby on Kilnsea wetlands there were still 2 Spoonbill with 3 Caspian Gull (juvenile, 2cy and 4cy birds), 3 Wigeon, 20 Teal, 2 Little-ringed Plover, 3 Ruff, 2 Curlew Sandpiper, 7 Black-tailed Godwit, a Spotted Redshank, 260 Redshank, 5 Greenshank, 2 Green Sandpiper and 90+ Mediterranean Gull. Peregrine trying to scatter the Ducks and Waders on Kilnsea wetlands. The nest site is usually high in a conifer tree. Today’s first frost of the winter #HunmanbyGap @FileyBirdObs was a shock after one of the warmest November’s I can remember- it’s been ... fantastic for late flying moths including this wonderfully named Sprawler - the first for The Gap @BC_Yorkshire @ynuorg With the change in the weather and no new arrivals to bolster numbers the number of migrant declined, though some of the good birds remained.
